One of Boston’s well-known dining venues is set to close its doors, after parent company Whitbread announced a major shake-up of its restaurant business.

The Burton House Brewers Fayre has been named among nearly 200 sites across the UK and Ireland earmarked for closure, as the firm looks to make significant cost savings and refocus its operations.

Whitbread, which also owns Premier Inn, confirmed the move is part of a new five-year strategy aimed at saving £250 million. The plan includes shutting down the remaining Brewers Fayre and Beefeater restaurants, marking the end of two long-standing high street brands.

The closure of Burton House represents a significant loss for Boston, where the venue has served as a popular spot for families, visitors, and hotel guests alike. Located alongside a Premier Inn, the restaurant has been a familiar part of the town’s hospitality offering for many years.

Across the UK, the decision is expected to impact around 3,800 jobs, approximately 12% of Whitbread’s workforce, although the company says it hopes to redeploy many employees where possible.

Whitbread’s Chief Executive, Dominic Paul, said the changes were necessary due to rising costs, including increases in business rates and National Insurance following recent government budget changes introduced by Rachel Reeves.

He added that the company plans to replace traditional restaurant formats with integrated food and beverage options within its hotels, which it believes are more in line with customer demand and will allow for further expansion of hotel rooms.

Burton House is not the only Lincolnshire site affected. The Farrier (Brewers Fayre) in Grantham, The Anchor (Beefeater) in Scunthorpe and Mill Lodge (Beefeater) in Lincoln have also been confirmed for closure.

At this stage, no official dates have been announced for when Burton House or the other venues will cease trading.
