Members of Boston Neighbourhood Board had the chance to view the exciting transformation of Shodfriars Hall during a recent tour.

The significant and sensitive refurbishment of one of the town’s iconic buildings is being carried out by owners Scorer Hawkins and external works have been supported by government funding, overseen by the Board.

The visit showcased the improvements to date of the grade II* listed building, including a new lantern and decorative bracket – made by a specialist craft team using wrought iron and brass with handmade glass – which replicates the original design.

Recent works have also included returning the chimney stacks back to their original form, in line with the vision of the building’s architect Sir George Gilbert Scott.

In addition, structural repairs and renovations to the roof have taken place, whilst decoration to the building’s exterior has reinstated the original paint scheme which was uncovered during the works.

Scorer Hawkins are also carrying out improvements to the interior – separate to the government funding supported external works – which were highlighted during the visit.

Claire Foster, Interim Chair of Boston Neighbourhood Board said: “I am so impressed by the work that has been taking place at Shodfriars, and in particular, how the project is reinstating the building’s historic features.

“Shodfriars is such an important part of Boston’s heritage, a true asset for the town, and the Board has been keen to see it restored and secured for future generations.

“This project underlines the commitment we have made as a Board to the town centre and improving historic buildings, and Shodfriars is a fine example of what sensitive renovation can achieve.”
