As 2024 draws to a close, it’s a great opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the UK Fresh Produce Network (UKFPN) over the past year. This has been a transformative year, with notable events, impactful collaborations, and strategic initiatives that have strengthened Lincolnshire’s agrifood sector and showcased the region on a national and international stage.

The year began with the UKFPN International Trade Conference, held at Boston United’s Jakemans Community Stadium. This prestigious event saw key stakeholders, including members of the House of Lords, come together to discuss the future of the fresh produce sector. The conference laid the groundwork for a year focused on addressing sector challenges and driving growth.

One of our key milestones was a roundtable discussion with DEFRA at the House of Lords, where we addressed critical challenges facing the agrifood sector. This high-level engagement ensured that the voices of Lincolnshire businesses were heard at the heart of government, strengthening our commitment to supporting local producers and suppliers.

In the summer, the UKFPN hosted the Festival of Agriculture in Spalding, bringing together 200 guests from across the industry. This event celebrated the resilience and innovation of the agrifood sector, highlighting the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing in ensuring future success.

The establishment of the UKFPN All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) has been a significant achievement this year. The APPG provides a platform to advocate for the needs of the fresh produce industry, ensuring continued dialogue between policymakers and businesses.

Looking ahead to 2025, we’re excited to host a Funding, Finance, and Trade Conference, which will provide agrifood businesses with the tools and resources they need to thrive in an ever-changing economic landscape.

The impact of the UKAPF Fund and the Grants for Growth schemes has been profound, offering much-needed financial support to businesses across Lincolnshire. These initiatives have enabled local enterprises to innovate, expand, and contribute to the region’s economic vitality.

As a proud Bostonian, I was delighted to attend the Christmas light switch-on, which brought a magical atmosphere to the town. It was heartening to see the streets bustling with activity, and the lights truly captured the festive spirit.

Looking forward, I believe Boston has immense potential for transformation. A revitalised town centre, with a focus on attracting tourism through stronger links with Skegness, could mirror the success of destinations like Springfields if we could attract the right business This would not only boost the local economy but also cement Boston’s position as a vibrant hub for residents and visitors alike.

As Chair of the Boston Grammar School Board of Directors, I’m proud to share that our students and staff have had a highly successful year, showcasing their hard work and dedication. We’re eagerly anticipating the school awards in November, a moment to celebrate their achievements and inspire future success.

The UK Fresh Produce Network has demonstrated what can be achieved through collaboration, innovation, and strategic vision. As we move into 2025, I’m confident that our efforts will continue to make a lasting impact on the sector and the communities we serve.

Here’s to another year of growth and opportunity for Boston, Lincolnshire, and the wider fresh produce network.
