Boston will have its own Parish Council following the completion of a Community Governance Review (CGR).

Proposals for the new council were approved on 19 October 2026  by members of the current Boston Borough Council which would itself be abolished if the recommendations of the Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) – currently paused by central government – are carried forward.

The CGR was launched in 2025 following concerns that LGR could remove the ability for Boston’s town centre communities to directly influence local matters through a dedicated local council.

The new Boston Parish Council will give the town’s unparished communities dedicated local representation and a stronger voice on local matters, as well as supporting Boston’s civic identity as local government structures evolve.

Boston Borough Council leader Councillor Dale Broughton said: “Members recognised the importance of ensuring Boston retains a strong local voice, preserves its unique civic identity and has local democratic arrangements that focus on the needs of the town’s communities.”

Chair of the CGR Working Group and Council Deputy Leader Councillor Mike Gilbert said: “This decision will help safeguard our town’s rich heritage, civic traditions and historic identity in the face of future changes to local government. Boston has a proud history that deserves to be protected and this decision provides an important foundation for that future.”

The review process included two public consultations. The first, held last year, sought views on whether Boston should have its own Parish Council with a clear majority of respondents, who expressed an opinion, supporting the proposal.

The second consultation considered the proposed parish boundary, the number of councillors required and the inclusion of two currently unparished areas adjoining Wyberton Parish.

Under the approved arrangements:

  • A new Boston Parish Council will be established from 1 April 2027
  • The Boston Parish will cover  the District Ward areas of Fenside, Skirbeck, St Thomas’s, Staniland, Station, Trinity, West and Witham as well as two currently unparished areas in the District Wyberton Ward

·        The Parish Council will comprise of 22 parish councillors. These will be elected across seven parish wards: Fenside (3), Skirbeck (5), St Thomas’s (2), Staniland and Station (4), Trinity (3), West (2),  Witham (3)

  • The first elections will be held on 6 May 2027
  • An initial first-year budget of £44,632 has been approved
  • Responsibility for specified allotments will transfer to the new council following its establishment.
  • Parish councillors will not be paid an allowance.

Further details of the review including a map of the new Parish Council electoral arrangements are available on the Council’s website.
