A significant chapter in Boston’s sporting history has come to a close after Lincolnshire infrastructure contractor ECIS Group successfully removed the iconic floodlight towers and podiums from the former Boston United Football Club stadium on York Street over the weekend.
The specialist operation marks another milestone in the transformation of the historic site, with the towering floodlights having overlooked decades of memorable matches, celebrations and sporting moments since they became a defining feature of the stadium skyline.
The project was undertaken by ECIS Group, a Lincolnshire-based contractor with expertise in complex infrastructure and engineering works. The company was also recently responsible for supporting the successful delivery of the enormous transformer transported by Collett Transport to the Bicker Fen Substation, showcasing its capability in delivering major engineering projects across the county.
For ECIS Group Director Keiron Major, however, the York Street project carried far greater personal significance.
He said: “A piece of football history comes down. ECIS Group has successfully completed the removal of the iconic floodlight towers at York Street Stadium.
“For decades, these towers stood proudly over the ground, lighting up countless matches and becoming a landmark recognised by generations of players, supporters and the local community. While they have now come down, the memories they created will remain forever.
“For me personally, this project meant even more. As a youngster, I had the privilege of playing on this very pitch, making some incredible memories with my grandads. To return years later with my business delivering this specialist project is something I’ll always be proud of.
“A huge thank you to MTX for trusting a local Lincolnshire company to carry out this work.
“As a way of giving something back to the community that has supported this historic ground for so many years, ECIS Group will donate £250 to the Boston United Community Foundation.
“It’s been an honour to play a small part in the next chapter of such an iconic site.”
The removal of the floodlights signals the end of one of York Street’s most recognisable features. For generations of Boston United supporters, players and residents, the towering structures became synonymous with football in the town, illuminating countless evening fixtures and standing as a lasting symbol of the club’s long history at its former home.
While the floodlights have now disappeared from Boston’s skyline, their legacy will continue to live on in the memories of the thousands who passed through the turnstiles at York Street over the years.
The successful completion of the project also highlights the expertise of Lincolnshire businesses, with ECIS Group once again demonstrating its ability to safely deliver highly specialised engineering operations on landmark projects across the county.
