UPDATE - 15:00 Friday 6th February 2026

Anglian Water has confirmed that repairs to the burst water main on Spalding Road have now been completed.

The emergency closure remains in place on the southbound carriageway between the ATS Roundabout (London Road) and the Spirit of Endeavour Roundabout (Marsh Lane) while teams work to reinstate the road surface over the next couple of days.

The burst, which saw water flowing across the carriageway on Sunday evening, initially led to a single-lane closure before a full closure was put in place to allow engineers to safely repair the damaged pipe.

Anglian Water says they are now focusing on making the road safe and fully reopening the route, with hopes the A16 southbound will reopen by early next week.

Motorists are advised to continue following the signed diversions via London Road and Wallace Way and to allow extra time for their journeys until the road is fully reopened.

An emergency road closure has been put in place on the southbound carriageway of Spalding Road after a burst water main caused flooding across the road.

Anglian Water has closed the A16 southbound between the ATS Roundabout (London Road) and the Spirit of Endeavour Roundabout (Marsh Lane) while urgent repair works are carried out.

Engineers began work yesterday with a single-lane closure in place to fix the burst, but the damage has since been assessed as more serious, prompting a full road closure today to allow repairs to continue safely.

Water was seen flowing across the carriageway on Sunday evening, raising concerns about the condition of the road surface and the underlying infrastructure.

As a result, the A16 southbound exit at the ATS Roundabout has been closed, with traffic being diverted via London Road and Wallace Way.

An Anglian Water spokesperson said: “We’re sorry for any traffic disruption in Boston. Our teams are repairing a leak on a burst water main on Spalding Road. In order to keep our people and other road users safe while we carry out this work, we’ve closed the stretch of Spalding Road (A16) between the Marsh Lane and London Road roundabouts.”

Motorists are being advised to allow extra time for their journeys and to follow the signed diversion routes while repair works are ongoing. Anglian Water has not yet confirmed how long the closure is expected to remain in place.

An Anglian Water spokesperson continued: “There’s a full diversion in place, but we appreciate that the A16 is a busy road, so we’re very sorry for any inconvenience. This will be in place until our engineers have been able to finish their repair work. We’d like to thank our customers in Boston for bearing with us while we get things back to normal.”
