A jury has begun deliberating in the trial of a man accused of murdering a nine-year-old girl.

Lilia Valutyte was playing outside a shop where her mother was working in Boston, Lincolnshire, when she was fatally stabbed by Deividas Skebas on 28 July 2022.

Skebas, 26, formerly of Thorold Street, Boston, admits killing Lilia but denies murder, saying his responsibility was diminished by his mental state.

Prosecutors accept that Skebas has a mental illness but argue he was able to form a rational judgement at the time, when Lilia was killed by a single stab wound to the heart.

Summing up, Mr Justice Choudhory told the jury to set aside emotion when reaching their verdict.

The trial continues.
