A yellow weather warning for fog has been issued by the Met Office, covering the period from midnight until 10am on Wednesday morning, with motorists and travellers being urged to take extra care.
The warning highlights the risk of patches of dense fog, which could lead to difficult driving conditions and some disruption to travel across the region.
The Met Office says areas of fog will begin to develop on Tuesday night, initially forming in western parts of the warning area before spreading eastwards through the night. Visibility may be significantly reduced in places, increasing the risk of hazardous travel conditions.
While fog is expected to clear from the west before dawn, it is likely to be slower to lift across the East Midlands and the south east, meaning some areas could still be affected during the morning rush hour.
Slower journey times are expected, with delays to bus and train services possible. There is also a chance of flight delays or cancellations, particularly during the early morning period. Reduced visibility may affect roads, especially in rural and low-lying areas.
Travellers are advised to allow extra time for journeys, check road conditions before setting off, and amend travel plans where possible. Drivers should ensure they know how to correctly use fog lights and check they are working before travelling.
Those using public transport or flying are advised to check for updates with their travel provider and follow any guidance issued. The Met Office also reminds the public that weather warnings can change and recommends staying up to date with the latest local forecasts throughout the warning period.
