Former United Counties League side Brackley Town will be in the spotlight this weekend when their FA Cup tie against Notts County is shown live on TV.

Oddly, Poachers fans might remember them as being whipping boys in the three seasons when our paths crossed from 1991 to 1994.

Brackley finished rock bottom of the UCL Premier Division in each of those campaigns, registering a spectacularly poor goal difference.

In 1992-93, they didn’t win a single league game all season, scoring only 20 goals and conceding an eye-watering 210. A year later they did at least manage a couple of league victories, but conceded ever more goals – an astonishing 216.

Not surprisingly, Boston Town won every one of the seven games they played against the Saints in that period, including a 7-0 away win in the KO Cup.

Their best win was a 9-0 hammering in a home league game in March 1993.

Since then, Brackley have transformed their fortunes, winning promotion to the National League for the first time in May.

Their FA Cup game against Notts County kicks off at 5.30pm on Saturday (1 November) and will be show live on BBC2.

Another non-league minnow on TV this weekend will be Maldon & Tiptree, who face Port Vale away on Sunday (2 November). That tie kicks off at 3pm and is being shown on TNT Sports.

They competed alongside the Poachers in the Eastern Counties League for two seasons in the 1960s – we were then known as Boston FC while they were called Maldon Town.

Our 6-2 away win against them in November 1967 was one of our most memorable of that era. A young Dennis Reeson scored a penalty that day.

Good luck also to fellow Lincolnshire side Gainsborough Trinity, whose game at home to Accrington Stanley kicks off at 5.15pm on Sunday and is also being screened by TNT Sports.

Their Holy Blues squad is likely to features Sisa Tuntulwana, who previously played for the Poachers.
