One of Boston’s most popular online communities is set to fall silent next month, after its admin announced it will no longer accept new posts.

Darren Ruck, administrator of the Boston the People (United Kingdom) Facebook group, which has more than 19,000 members, revealed the news in a statement to members this week.

From 1 September 2025, the group will be “mothballed”, meaning no fresh content will be published, although the existing archive of posts, photos, and discussions will remain online for members to browse.

“I will not be passing it on to a new admin or moderator,” Darren wrote. “Every dog has its day and I think BtP has had its day. I have considered handing over the reins, but I think it would be better for those willing to start their own group and build it in the way and shape they see fit, rather than trying to re-invent or resurrect BtP.”

However, members looking for a fresh space to share news, photos and discussion will not have to wait long. A new Facebook group, Boston the People New, has already been launched by MrExplorer99 in partnership with Boston VIBE. The new group aims to provide a “fresh operation” for local conversation and community engagement.

Joint Statement from the Directors of Boston VIBE and MrExplorer99 “We’re excited to announce the launch of Boston the People New, a fresh and modern community group for the people of Boston.

“With the original Boston the People group set to pause posting from September, we felt it was important to provide a welcoming space where local people can continue to share news, stories, photographs, and discussion about our town.

“Boston the People New will build on the spirit of community that made the original group so popular, while bringing a new approach to moderation, content and engagement, ensuring it remains a friendly, informative, and positive space for everyone.

“We look forward to growing this new community together and invite all residents, past and present, to join us in shaping the future of Boston online.”
