Emergency services were called to the Greenyard Frozen factory on Marsh Lane, Boston, on Wednesday morning following reports of an ammonia leak on site.
Crews from Boston and Kirton Fire Stations attended the scene, working alongside site staff to assess the situation and ensure public safety. The alarm was raised after an oil leak from a compressor discharged a small volume of ammonia.
Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue confirmed that teams were deployed and that the incident was contained within the premises. No injuries have been reported.
A spokesperson for Greenyard Frozen said: ” Early Wednesday morning at our Boston site we had a malfunction take place on one of our compressors which resulted in an oil leak containing a small discharge of ammonia. A full site evacuation successfully took place with no injuries sustained and the plant was isolated and made safe. Once the building was given clearance to re-enter, the plant was very quickly repaired and full production recovery plan was executed. All staff returned to work at 14:00.”
The company added that all necessary safety procedures were followed and that there was no risk to members of the public. Staff were temporarily evacuated as a precaution.
Ammonia is commonly used in industrial refrigeration but can pose health risks if not properly managed. Fire services remained on site for several hours to ensure the area was fully ventilated and the leak controlled.
The local enforcement agencies have been notified, as is standard protocol for such incidents.
Local residents were not required to evacuate.
