The Boston Woods Trust has installed new bird boxes at Dion’s Wood Nature Reserve, further enhancing the habitat for local wildlife. This latest addition focuses on the lakeside area, where special nesting boxes for Swallows and House Martins have now been erected.

The bird boxes were once again expertly handcrafted by Simon Horniblow, whose continued support has been praised by the Trust. The nesting structure has been mounted on a recycled telegraph pole generously donated by Richard Taylor.

“We are very pleased to put some more bird boxes up in Dions, this time by the lake,” said a spokesperson for the Boston Woods Trust. “These have, once again, been made by Simon Horniblow – many thanks to him. We are also very grateful to Richard Taylor for donating the pole, and to the hardworking volunteers who put the structure up. We’re looking forward to early occupancy!”

Dion’s Wood, the latest addition to the Boston Woods project, sits between Willoughby Road and the rear of Pilgrim Hospital. The 35-acre site was landscaped in 2021 and has rapidly become a vital green space for wildlife and the community. By the end of 2022, nearly 17,000 trees and shrubs had been planted, alongside the seeding of wildflower meadows.

Today, the nature reserve boasts 3km of accessible walking paths, which can be reached from Willoughby Road, Rowan Way or Sibsey Road. As a designated Nature Reserve, visitors are reminded that dogs are not permitted and are encouraged to stay on marked paths to protect the delicate environment.

The new nesting structures are expected to attract a flurry of feathered visitors in the coming months, further establishing Dion’s Wood as a thriving habitat for birds and other wildlife.
