The historic Fydell House was the backdrop for a celebration of beauty, heritage, and community spirit on Monday night, as the annual Pride of Boston Awards announced its 2025 winners.
Each year, members of the Boston Civic Group come together to honour properties across the town centre and conservation area that leave a lasting impression on visitors while preserving Boston’s rich architectural heritage for future generations.
This year’s awards saw an impressive 28 properties nominated, ranging from grand listed buildings to cherished small businesses such as local bakeries and hairdressers. After careful deliberation, a shortlist of 24 finalists was put forward to a specially selected judging panel.
In a refreshing move, the Civic Group was keen to include younger voices in the judging process for 2025. Stepping up to the task with enthusiasm were members of the Boston Police Cadet force and students from Boston Grammar School, who visited each property on the list and provided valuable insights on how the buildings enhance the town’s charm and character.
The awards ceremony was hosted in the elegant setting of Fydell House, where long-standing civic members Dudley Bryant and Dr. Martin Fairman presented certificates to those highly commended, as well as the runners-up and winner.
Students from Boston Grammar School said: “Boston is such an historic town and you are surrounded by centuries of history” while noting that “The modern and the historic are integrated and juxtaposed” and that “seeing the progression and change in architecture over many years is rewarding”.
With a nod to the forthcoming Boston 400 celebrations, one of astute participants noted that “We are the roots of Boston Massachusetts. Medieval Boston is the common ancestor of the two modern day Bostons”.
The Civic Group extended its thanks to all who participated, especially the younger judges, for helping ensure the future of Boston’s architectural appreciation is in safe and thoughtful hands.
