A service was held on Sunday to mark Battle of Britain Day as dignitaries, servicemen and community representatives gathered in Boston to pay their respects to all those who served our country.

Squadron personnel from RAF Coningsby, the 141 Squadron Air Cadets, officials and councillors from Boston Borough Council accompanied representatives from Lincolnshire Police, Mayor of Boston Councillor Helen Staples and Rector of the Parish of Boston, Rev’d David Stephenson at Boston’s War Memorial.

Wreaths were laid by Derek Coates, President of RAFA and by Wing Commander Nick Startup, before parading through to St. Botolph’s Church.

The Worshipful Mayor of Boston, Cllr Helen Staples, said: “I was very proud and honoured to represent the Borough as Mayor at the Battle of Britain service and parade on Sunday.
“This was a time to reflect on the sacrifice and the immense bravery shown during the summer of 1940, including from the three squadrons now based at RAF Coningsby. Their bravery in defending out country was all for the freedom every one of us enjoys today.
“Boston has a very close connection with RAF Coningsby who have been granted Freedom of the Borough so I was honoured to be part of the very moving and poignant service at St Botolph’s and the parade from the Memorial Gardens.
“We will never forget the sacrifices made during the Battle of Britain.”
