Boston United were denied their first National League victory by a last-gasp Tamworth equaliser on Saturday afternoon.

Jai Rowe handed the Pilgrims a 41st minute lead with a header from a Frankie Maguire corner – and United held that advantage until stoppage time, after seeing two Jacob Hazel goals ruled out by marginal offside calls.

Substitute Chris Wreh struck for the visitors with 21 seconds of added time remaining to leave the Jakemans Community Stadium stunned.

United boss Ian Culverhouse had made four changes ahead of kick-off, with Sam Osborne handed his full debut for the Pilgrims.

Tamworth had two glorious chances early on, with Cameron Gregory saving brilliantly to deny Nathan Tshikuna before Miracle Okafor advanced through the offside trap to drag a shot wide.

Jas Singh, so often United’s nemesis over the years, made a sprawling save to keep out Hazel in the 16th minute. United went close again when Rowe got up to divert Dan Mooney’s corner narrowly wide.

Singh saved superbly to deny Osborne, but from the resulting Maguire flag-kick, ROWE got up highest to glance home his and United’s first goal of the season.

Rowe nearly repeated the feat nine minutes after the break, but Singh sprung to his right to claw aside the full-back’s header from Mooney’s corner.

Hazel fell foul of tight offside calls in the 60th and 64th minutes, while Gregory later helped Ben Acquaye’s free-kick over the bar for a corner.

With United contesting a contentious decision to award Tamworth a throw-in, when the ball did not appear to have left the field of play, long throw merchant Tom Tonks freed Jamie Willets to feed WREH – and the Tamworth sub did the rest with a sublime curling finish from the edge of the penalty area.
