Boston residents are being urged to prepare for disruption as thunderstorms and heavy showers are set to sweep across the area today and tomorrow.

The Met Office has issued a weather warning, with storms expected between 11:00am and 8:00pm today (Wednesday 3rd September) and again from 2:00am through to 5:00pm on Thursday 4th September.

Forecasters warn that while not everyone will see the worst of the conditions, some areas could experience sudden downpours, hail, lightning and strong gusty winds. In the most active storms, bursts of intense rainfall may lead to surface water flooding, especially in low-lying parts of town and areas with poor drainage.

According to the Met Office, the storms could cause hazardous driving conditions on roads such as the A16, A52 and surrounding rural routes due to spray, standing water and hail. Longer journey times are likely for commuters using car, bus or train, while there is also a risk of damage to some buildings and structures from lightning strikes or strong winds. Train services may face delays or cancellations, and short-term power cuts affecting homes, shops and businesses are possible. There is also a small chance that flooding may occur in a few properties across the borough.

Authorities are urging residents to stay cautious and take steps to prepare for potential disruption. A Met Office spokesperson said: “If your area is prone to flash flooding, it’s sensible to consider a flood plan and keep an emergency kit ready. Gather essentials such as torches, batteries and a phone power pack in case of a power cut.”

Travellers are advised to check conditions before setting out, with bus and train services possibly facing delays during the worst of the weather. Motorists are also reminded to drive carefully, allow extra time for journeys, and avoid attempting to drive through floodwater.

Safety is also a priority if caught outdoors during a storm. The advice is clear: avoid sheltering under trees or tall structures, and instead seek refuge in a safe enclosed place, such as a building or car. If on higher ground, move to a lower area until the storm passes.

The weather warning remains in force until Thursday evening, though conditions are expected to gradually improve later in the day. The Met Office stresses that warnings may change quickly and recommends keeping up to date with the latest forecast.

Boston VIBE will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates if the storms cause significant local disruption.
