Rail passengers travelling between Boston and Skegness are experiencing significant disruption today (Thursday) after trespassers were reported near the railway line at Sibsey.

According to East Midlands Railway (EMR), the incident has brought services to a halt on the busy Nottingham–Grantham–Skegness route, with trains unable to run in either direction through the affected area.

Network Rail engineers and officers from the British Transport Police are currently at the scene, working to safely remove the trespassers and allow services to resume. The nature of the disturbance has not yet been confirmed, but the incident has caused considerable delays for passengers heading to and from the coast.

As a result of the disruption, EMR has been forced to start and terminate train services at Boston, leaving no direct rail link between Boston, Wainfleet, and Skegness until further notice.

To keep passengers moving, a replacement bus service is now being rolled out to connect the two towns. The first services will run at 12:55pm in both directions:

  • Boston to Skegness — calling at Wainfleet, expected journey time 55 minutes.
  • Skegness to Boston — calling at Wainfleet, expected journey time 55 minutes.

EMR says the closure is expected to last less than an hour, with hopes the line will reopen and the advertised timetable resume by 2pm. However, passengers are being advised to check live travel updates before setting off.

An EMR spokesperson said: “We are working closely with Network Rail and the British Transport Police to resolve this incident as quickly as possible. As soon as the line has reopened, our priority will be to get trains running to their advertised times again. We’d like to thank passengers for their understanding and patience.”

Those travelling between Nottingham, Grantham, Boston, and Skegness today are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and to expect possible delays even after the line reopens, as services return to normal. Live updates are available via the EMR website and social media channels.

This is the latest in a series of incidents to affect Lincolnshire’s coastal rail route during the summer period, with operators reminding the public of the dangers and legal consequences of trespassing on the railway.
