William Lovell Church of England Academy is taking a strong stand for student health and wellbeing with its newly launched “Ditch the Vape” initiative — a six-week summer campaign encouraging students and families to break free from vaping.
The campaign officially kicks off on Tuesday 22nd July with a bold and compassionate move: a Vape Amnesty Day. On this day, students and family members can confidentially bring any vapes, e-liquids, pods, cartridges, and related items to the school for safe and anonymous disposal — no questions asked.
The goal is simple but powerful: to support young people in making healthier choices, free of stigma or punishment.
“This amnesty is about removing the temptation, not penalising anyone,” said Mrs Pickett, the school’s Wellbeing Mentor. “It’s a fresh start, and a show of support for students and families who want to make a change.”
In the lead-up to the event, students attended a school assembly focused on the risks of vaping, especially the damage it can do to the lungs. The campaign also highlights a range of vaping-related health issues including addiction, coughing, increased heart rate, chest pains, and even lung cancer.
The school is also encouraging other educational institutions to join the movement and adopt similar amnesty efforts. “We’re not just doing this for one day — this is about starting a long-term conversation and culture shift,” said the spokesperson.
To support those who take up the challenge, the academy is providing access to resources both in school and online, including apps like Quit Genius, Smoke Free, and Kwit, which offer CBT support, habit tracking, and gamified tools to help users stay motivated.
The six-week campaign will run throughout the summer, offering encouragement to families to not only improve their health but also save money. The school’s message is clear: “Let’s work together for a cleaner, healthier school — and a brighter future.”
