In a dramatic turn of events at Boston Borough Council this evening (Monday 21 July), Councillor Dale Broughton has been named the new Leader of the Council following a successful motion of no confidence in outgoing Leader Councillor Anne Dorrian.
The vote, passed during a full council meeting held at Municipal Buildings, saw a majority of councillors back the motion, effectively ending Councillor Dorrian’s two-year tenure at the helm of the authority. The motion was tabled amid growing concerns over leadership direction, governance transparency, and strained relationships within the council chamber.
Councillor Broughton, who represents the Coastal Ward, was swiftly elected to take the reins following the vote.
Councillor Dorrian, who became the first female leader of Boston Borough Council in 2023, has faced mounting political pressure in recent weeks. Critics accused her administration of poor communication and failing to bring consensus on key decisions affecting the future of the borough.
The leadership change comes at a pivotal time for Boston, with looming decisions over housing, transport, and the future shape of local governance across Lincolnshire.
