Residents across Lincolnshire and much of England are being urged to prepare for disruption as the Met Office issues a Yellow Weather Warning for thunderstorms, in place from 9pm on Friday until 6pm on Saturday.
The warning covers Lincolnshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Rutland, and extends to large parts of England including the East of England, London and South East, North East, North West, South West, West Midlands, and Yorkshire & Humber.
According to the Met Office, areas of heavy, thundery rain could lead to widespread disruption to transport and travel from late Friday through much of Saturday, with a risk to homes, businesses, and public services.
What to Expect
- Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and road closures.
- Flooding or lightning strikes could cause delays and cancellations to train and bus services.
- Power cuts are possible, alongside disruption to other services.
- Flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with possible damage from floodwater, lightning, hail or strong winds.
- Fast flowing or deep floodwater could pose a danger to life.
- Some communities may become cut off if roads flood.
The heaviest rain is forecast to arrive in the south of the warning area late Friday, gradually spreading north through Saturday. Rainfall could reach 20–30mm in less than an hour in many places, with some locations seeing up to 60–90mm in under three hours. While rain may clear from southern areas by early Saturday afternoon, further thunderstorms could develop later in the day.
In addition to torrential downpours, there is also a risk of frequent lightning, gusty winds, and large hail.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Jason Kelly said: “More warnings could be issued for the weekend and early next week. Keep an eye on the Met Office forecast for updates as the picture develops.
“Within the warm and humid airmass we will potentially see temperatures reaching 30°C or more for parts of eastern England by Friday, with very warm and muggy conditions continuing into the weekend in parts of central and southern England.”
The Met Office advises:
- Check if your location is at risk of flash flooding and prepare a flood plan.
- Secure outdoor items such as garden furniture, trampolines, and bins ahead of gusty winds.
- Check road conditions and public transport timetables before travelling, allowing extra time or adjusting plans.
- Prepare for potential power cuts by gathering torches, batteries, mobile phone power packs, and essential items.
- If outdoors during a storm, seek safe shelter such as a car, avoiding trees and high ground.
Weather warnings are subject to change. Residents are encouraged to monitor the latest forecasts on the Met Office website and local news platforms.
