A second burst water main in Boston has forced Anglian Water to announce the full closure of part of John Adams Way this weekend for urgent repair work.
The new burst occurred less than 50 metres from the original rupture on South Street, which caused significant disruption earlier in the week, including the temporary closure of Greyfriars Surgery due to a loss of power and water. South Street has remained closed since the initial incident on Sunday night.
Now, a fresh rupture has appeared in the middle of John Adams Way — one of the town’s busiest roads — prompting immediate emergency measures.
In a statement, Anglian Water confirmed:
“We’re working hard to repair a burst water main on South Street in Boston. Because of where we need to dig to fix it, we need to close part of John Adams Way from 8pm on Friday 4th July through to late evening on Sunday 6th July.”
The road will be closed to all southbound traffic between the Liquorpond Street Roundabout and the Bargate Roundabout throughout the repair period. Northbound traffic will remain unaffected.
Drivers approaching from the Liquorpond Street Roundabout and crossing the River Haven will be diverted at the South Street junction, near the Co-op Funeral Home. From there, they will be required to turn right onto the A1138 (South End) and follow the diversion.
The official diversion for all vehicles will be:
A52 Liquorpond Street → Lister Way → A1137 Fydell Street → Sluice Bridge → A1137 Norfolk Street → A1137 Horncastle Road → Bargate Roundabout.
Motorists are advised to plan ahead, expect delays, and allow extra travel time over the weekend. Anglian Water has apologised for the disruption and thanked residents for their patience while crews work to restore the area’s water infrastructure.
