The Worshipful the Mayor of Boston, Councillor Barrie Pierpoint, was honoured and privileged to raise the Armed Forces Day flag this morning at the War Memorial Garden on Wide Bargate, officially marking the beginning of Armed Forces Week in Boston.
Joined by Deputy Mayor Cllr Patricia Marson, members of the Armed Forces, the RAFA Boston Branch, students from Haven High Academy and Boston Grammar School, Cllr Dale Broughton, Cllr Christopher Mountain and members of the public, the mayor led a moment of reflection and recognition for the service and sacrifice of the nation’s military personnel.
The ceremonial flag-raising was part of a coordinated national effort, with local authorities across the UK raising the Armed Forces Day flag simultaneously in the lead-up to Armed Forces Day on Saturday 28 June.
Speaking at the event, Cllr Pierpoint said: “It is an honour and privilege to be standing here today to raise the flag in preparation for Armed Forces Day on 28th June. In raising the flag simultaneously, we are raising awareness of the contributions of the Armed Forces personnel, past, present and future.
I am very pleased to see schoolchildren from Haven High and Boston Grammar attend to see and be part of the flag raising. It has been lovely to meet and talk to the students.”
Boston Borough Council is also proudly flying an Armed Forces Day flag from the Municipal Buildings on West Street as a continued show of support throughout the week.
Armed Forces Week provides an opportunity for communities across the UK to show their support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community, from currently serving troops to service families, veterans and cadets.
