This month kicked off with Lincolnshire Day, and it was wonderful to see so many Lincolnshire flags proudly displayed throughout the constituency. Unfortunately, as the celebration fell on a Tuesday, I was required to be in London. However, I marked the day with pride in my Westminster office.
In the coming months, Lincolnshire will be in the national spotlight for more than just a day. Next May, voters will have the historic opportunity to elect Lincolnshire’s first-ever mayor. This election presents a chance for residents to make history by choosing a mayor beyond the traditional two main parties. Watch this space!
After nearly every week of entering the ballot to ask the Prime Minister a question at PMQs, I finally secured a question on the 30th of October. Embracing the Halloween season, I’ve decided to give Ed Miliband a break from my questions and spook the Prime Minister instead. And I certainly spooked him. My question can be seen here: https://x.com/ticerichard/status/1851604478589354188?s=46&t=M1u6De4rb8uWaJnsLcTgNA
I am still waiting for an answer.
Earlier this month, I secured a Westminster Hall debate on the critical state of the UK steel industry. While steel may not be a key industry in our constituency, it’s closely linked to broader issues like Net Zero, which has left many of us colder and poorer while pushing for unsightly projects like pylons. I frequently apply for debates, and when successful, I plan to focus on key local concerns such as pylons and flooding.
Another frequently raised issue in my inbox is internet connectivity. Recently, I met with BT Openreach to discuss areas in the constituency that are particularly underserved and in need of significant improvement. I’m also keeping an eye on places where the connection is not terrible but could still be enhanced. Friskney and Old Leake are two key areas identified for major upgrades. We’re actively working with BT Openreach to understand the requirements for improving services in these locations. If you’ve experienced connectivity issues, please reach out and let me know where you live and what challenges you’re facing. Results of internet speed tests are very much appreciated.
I’ve also spent a lot of time around the constituency, meeting local figureheads and business leaders including Mountains Butchers, Elmwood Care Home where I was held to account by 94 year old Pam (who has demanded I return in six months time with a written update on progress made), Larrington Trailers in Wyberton, Swifts Junior Football Club, and Alistair Arundell from Smartmove Hotels in Boston.
I recently met with Mike Barlow, who shared the heartbreaking story of his wife’s passing. She had repeatedly sought a face-to-face appointment, but was consistently denied and misdiagnosed over the phone. By the time her cancer was correctly identified, it was too late. This is completely unacceptable. Face-to-face appointments are essential, and I have already sent a written question to the Government on this matter. Part of their response stated, “We have pledged to guarantee a face-to-face appointment for all those who want one.” I will be monitoring this closely and will raise the issue again to ensure the Government delivers on its promise.
