Commuters faced major disruption this afternoon after a fault at the Spalding Road level crossing brought large parts of Boston to a standstill.

The issue occurred shortly before 4.30pm, with the crossing barriers believed to have malfunctioned, triggering significant delays during the busy late afternoon period.

According to traffic data, congestion quickly spread beyond the immediate area, with Boston effectively gridlocked at its peak. Heavy traffic remains visible around Spalding Road and John Adams Way, with knock-on delays continuing across surrounding routes.

Motorists have reported long queues and slow-moving traffic, with some drivers attempting to divert through residential streets to avoid the worst of the disruption.

The Spalding Road crossing is a key route in and out of the town, meaning any fault can have an immediate and widespread impact on the local road network.

Network Rail has been approached for comment.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys while traffic conditions ease.
