Boston Town’s dreams of county cup glory were dashed on a night when nothing went right for them.

Already deprived of the cup-tied Layton Maddison, they lost both Macca Burdass and Harry Limb to injury inside the first 37 minutes of this county cup semi-final.

There was another hammer blow when Jordan Tate was shown a red card just before the interval.

Chris Funnell’s men were still on course to at least take the tie to penalties when Boston United loanee Will Langford scored the only goal of the game for the visitors with a rocket after 74 minutes.

Mystifyingly, Langford was deemed eligible to play in the Lincs Senior Trophy, despite having also played for his parent club in the Lincs Senior Cup this season.

Grantham will now play either Harrowby United or Louth Town in the final.

This defeat means Poachers’ winless record against the Gingerbreads goes on. They’ve played Grantham 18 times since 1965 and remarkably, have still never been victorious.

On Saturday (24 January), they’re back at home, this time to Ashby Ivanhoe in the United Counties League Premier North. Kick-off will be 3pm.

Town: Portas, Burdass (Hudson), Smith, Tate, Ford, Wilson, Gurney, Priestley (Hunnings), Nuttell, Limb (Bayliss), Cotton; unused sub: Munton
