A yellow weather warning for snow and ice has been issued by the Met Office, covering Boston and the wider Lincolnshire area from midnight to midnight on Monday 5 January, with scattered snow showers and icy patches expected to cause disruption in places.
Residents in and around Boston are being advised to take extra care, particularly when travelling. The warning highlights the potential for longer journey times on local roads, as well as possible disruption to bus and rail services. There is also an increased risk of slips and falls on icy surfaces, especially on untreated pavements, cycle paths and quieter roads.
While the heaviest snowfall is expected further north along the east coast, forecasters say scattered snow showers may still move inland from the North Sea during Monday, bringing small accumulations in parts of coastal and inland Lincolnshire, including the Boston area. Gusty winds and isolated lightning strikes are also possible near the coast, adding to the risk of difficult conditions.
Snow showers are expected to become more isolated later on Monday evening. However, temperatures are forecast to fall below freezing overnight, meaning icy patches could persist into Monday night and early Tuesday morning.
The Met Office is urging people to plan journeys carefully, allow extra time, and check road conditions and public transport updates before setting off. Drivers are advised to ensure they are prepared for winter travel by carrying essentials such as warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, torch, ice scraper, de-icer, a high-visibility vest and a phone charger.
Those travelling on foot are encouraged to leave home earlier than usual to avoid rushing and to use main roads and pavements, which are more likely to have been treated. Cyclists are also advised to stick to treated routes where possible.
Weather conditions can change quickly, and residents are encouraged to stay up to date with the latest forecasts and any updates to weather warnings throughout Monday.
The Met Office also issued a weather warning for coastal areas including Skegness for today (Saturday), which saw snow showers blanket over the region.
