A yellow weather warning for snow and ice has been issued overnight and will remain in place until 11am on Thursday. The Met Office says wintry showers are expected to bring a risk of ice, with the potential for some disruption from Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Forecasters say roads and railways are likely to be affected, with longer journey times possible for those travelling by road, bus, or train. Icy patches are expected on untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths, and there is an increased risk of slips and falls as temperatures drop.

Wintry showers are set to push inland through Wednesday evening and continue overnight. As temperatures fall, snow may begin to settle, with around 1–2 cm possible in some areas, particularly at higher elevations above 100–150 metres. Ice is also likely to form on untreated surfaces, making early morning conditions hazardous.

Residents are being urged to take extra care. Snow and ice can cause delays and make driving conditions difficult, so planning ahead is advised. Allow additional time for journeys, check for any road closures or public transport delays, and adjust travel plans if needed.

Drivers are encouraged to carry essentials in case of delays, such as warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, torch, ice scraper or de-icer, warning triangle, high-visibility vest and an in-car phone charger.

For those heading out on foot, leaving the house slightly earlier can help avoid rushing, reducing the risk of accidents. Using pavements along main roads is recommended, as they are more likely to be treated. Cyclists are also advised to stick to main routes where possible.

The public is encouraged to stay updated, as weather warnings may change. The Met Office advises keeping an eye on the forecast for the latest information as conditions develop.
