The Met Office has officially named Storm Benjamin, which is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds across Lincolnshire throughout Thursday 23rd October, prompting two yellow weather warnings for the county.

The yellow warning for rain is in place from midnight until 9pm on Thursday, while the yellow warning for windruns from 3am through to 11:59pm, covering the entire day as the storm moves east across the country.

Forecasters warn that Storm Benjamin will bring gusts of 45–55mph widely across Lincolnshire, with stronger winds of up to 65mph possible along coastal areas and a small chance of gusts reaching 75mph in exposed spots during the late morning and afternoon.

Alongside the strong winds, a band of heavy rain will move across the region overnight and into Thursday morning, bringing 20–30mm of rainfall widely, and up to 50mm in some eastern parts. The combination of saturated ground and strong winds raises the risk of surface water flooding, travel disruption, and damage to buildings.

What to Expect

  • Longer journey times or cancellations to road, rail, air, and ferry services
  • Spray and flooding on roads, making driving conditions difficult
  • Possible damage to buildings, including tiles blown from roofs
  • Power cuts affecting homes, businesses, and mobile networks
  • Flying debris posing a small risk of injury and danger to life
  • Large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads and properties

Public Advice

Residents are being urged to secure outdoor items such as bins, trampolines, and garden furniture to prevent them becoming dangerous in the wind. The Met Office also recommends checking travel conditions before setting off, allowing extra time for journeys, and staying clear of coastal paths and sea fronts during the height of the storm.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said:

“Storm Benjamin will bring a spell of wet and very windy weather to much of eastern England, including Lincolnshire. People should prepare for potential travel disruption and stay up to date with the latest warnings as the system moves through.”

Both warnings will remain in effect throughout the day, with conditions expected to gradually improve late on Thursday night as the storm clears into the North Sea.
