The first trucks and fairground rides have begun arriving in Boston this week, marking the start of preparations for the town’s popular May Fair — set to officially open this weekend.

Excitement is building as lorries and ride components have been spotted setting up on the Cattle Market car park, with the colourful sights and sounds of the fair slowly taking shape. The Boston May Fair, which has roots dating back to 1125, remains one of the most popular and historic events on the town’s calendar, attracting thousands of visitors each year.

To facilitate the arrival and set-up of the fair, road closures will be in effect from 10am on Thursday 1st May until Monday 12th May. These will affect Wide Bargate and the Market Place, with diversions clearly marked for motorists.

A spokesperson for Boston Borough Council said: “Boston May Fair is a treasured tradition and a highlight in the town’s annual calendar. While the fair has changed dramatically since its beginnings in 1125, it continues to bring joy, vibrancy, and community spirit to Boston. We’re proud to support such a historic and exciting event, and we can’t wait to welcome visitors when the fair opens this weekend.”

This year’s fair promises an exciting array of attractions for all ages, from high-adrenaline thrill rides to traditional favouritesand family-friendly amusements. Local businesses are also gearing up for the boost in footfall, as thousands are expected to descend on the town centre during the 8-day event.

In celebration of the 900 anniversary of the fair, a special exhibition is currently being held in The Guildhall, featuring photographs and objects from Neil Watson and the Showman’s Guildhall. Unlike many towns that have moved their fairs to out-of-town locations, Boston continues to host its fair in the town centre. It remains one of the top street fairs in the country, cherished by showmen, townsfolk, and visitors.

David Worthington, Museum, events and venue officer at Boston Guildhall, said: “The May Fair has been a part of Boston’s story for centuries, and this exhibition is a fantastic way to help celebrate its incredible history. We’re delighted to invite people of all ages to step back in time and discover how this beloved fair has grown and changed over the last 900 years.”

The May Fair 900 Exhibition will be open at Boston Guildhall until Saturday 10 May, offering a rare glimpse into the fair’s enduring legacy.

Following the May Fair exhibition further developments will take place in the museum to improve the reception area, the shop and the Tourist Information layout.
